Fire Water Tank Design Basics: Capacity Calculation, Material, and Code Compliance for Industrial Sites
A reliable fire water tank is the cornerstone of any industrial fire protection system. Sprinklers, hose stations, foam systems, and deluge monitors are only as effective as the water supply behind them. This article explains how to properly size, specify, and procure a fire water tank for factories, warehouses, logistics parks, and process plants.
1. Determining Required Fire Water Volume
The required volume is dictated by the fire protection design basis, typically referencing:
NFPA 13 (Sprinkler Systems)
NFPA 14 (Standpipe/Hose Systems)
NFPA 22 (Water Tanks for Private Fire Protection)
Local fire authority requirements (e.g., GB 50974in China)
Basic Calculation Steps:
① Identify Hazard Classification
Light Hazard (offices, low-combustible storage)
Ordinary Hazard Group 1 & 2 (manufacturing, general warehousing)
Extra Hazard Group 1 & 2 (flammable liquid storage, aerosol plants, tire storage)
② Determine Design Density & Area of Operation
Example – Ordinary Hazard Group 2:
Density = 8.1 mm/min (0.134 L/min/m² × 60 ≈ 8.1 L/min/m² is incorrect-proper NFPAvalue: 0.20 gpm/ft² ≈ 8.1 L/min/m² over 2,000 ft² ≈ 232 m² → ~1,880 L/min sprinkler demand)
③ Add Hose Stream Allowance
Typically 950 L/min (250 gpm) for one hose stream, up to 3,800 L/min for extra hazard occupancies.
④ Multiply by Required Duration
Ordinary Hazard: 60–90 min
Extra Hazard: 90–120 min
Some jurisdictions require combined fire + process cooling water duration
⑤ Total Example:
Sprinkler demand 1,880 L/min + Hose 950 L/min = 2,830 L/min × 90 min = 254.7 m³ → Round up to 300 m³ with 10–20% margin = 330 m³.
2. Tank Type & Material Selection
Welded Steel Fire Water Tanks (Vertical Cylindrical)
Most common for capacities ≥100 m³
Carbon steel with internal potable-water epoxy lining (NSF/ANSI 61or equivalent) to prevent rust and keep water clear
Designed per API 650or AWWA D100(or GB 50128/ GB 50974)
Equipped with anti-vortex plate at suction, overflow, drain, roof hatch, exterior ladder
Sectional Bolted Panel Tanks (Galvanized / SS)
Modular panels bolted together on-site
Suitable for 50–500 m³ where crane access is limited
Faster install in confined plant rooms; less field welding
Underground Fire Water Tanks
Buried RC or steel tank with protective coating + cathodic protection
Saves surface area; requires water-tight manhole and frost protection in cold climates
3. Key Code Compliance Items (NFPA 22/ Equivalent)
|
Item |
Requirement |
|---|---|
|
Suction inlet |
Anti-vortex plate; located min. 1 pipe dia. above tank bottom |
|
Low-level alarm |
Signals when water drops below fire reserve volume |
|
Overflow |
Sized for max fill rate; discharge to safe location |
|
Freeze protection |
Insulation ± heat trace in climates where T < 0°C |
|
Access |
Lockable manway, ladder with cage per OSHA |
|
Make-up water |
Automatic float valve or city main with backflow preventer; separate from fire pump suction |
4. Integration with Fire Pump System
The fire water tank feeds the fire pump(s), which boost pressure to the sprinkler/standpipe system. Ensure:
Net Positive Suction Head Available (NPSHa) > NPSHr of pump
Suction piping sized for minimal friction loss
Isolation valves locked open; tamper switch monitored
5. Related Products – Sewage & Process Water Tanks
Zhongneng Huajian also supplies underground sewage tanks (septic/collection tanks for industrial wastewater) and process water storage tanks (raw water, clarified water, RO feed) in welded steel or sectional panel construction, allowing a single-source supplier for all site liquid-storage needs.
