Bolted tanks are marketed as "fast" and welded tanks as "permanent." The real choice depends on whether you are storing rainwater, cement powder or diesel. Zhongneng Huajian builds both welded steel silos (grain, mineral powder) and welded liquid tanks (vertical storage tanks), and buys bolted panels only for specific small-diameter auxiliary duties-so the framing below is vendor-neutral on outcome.
Sealing performance
Bolted panels use gaskets at every seam. After 5 years of thermal cycling, gasket compression relaxes; in water tanks this shows as weepage at 2 am, in grain silos as insect ingress. Welded construction has no linear gasket-only weld metal. For potable water and edible oil, welded is the default above 500 m³.
Diameter and height ceiling
Bolted systems top out around 12–14 m diameter economically because panel flatness and bolt pretension get hard to control. Welded vertical tanks routinely reach 60–80 m diameter (ZN's Dammam job was 66 m). If you need one tank above 5,000 m³ water or 2,000 m³ oil, welded wins.
Site labor vs shop control
Bolted tanks shift work to site: crane, bolting crew, gasket QC. Welded tanks shift work to shop: rolling, SAW, RT, coating in controlled booth. On a remote desert site with scarce welders, bolted may finish faster. Near a port with a good fab shop 200 km away, welded usually costs less total.
Corrosion path
Bolted seams hide crevice corrosion under gaskets; once rust starts, you replace panels. Welded seams can be UT-scanned and repaired locally. For seawater or chloride soil, welded + proper coating outperforms bolted + gasket.
Lifecycle math
Bolted tank capex looks 10–15 % lower at 1,000 m³. At 10,000 m³ welded catches up because panel count explodes. Over 20 years, bolted gasket replacement (years 6, 12, 18) plus leakage downtime often erases the saving.
FAQ snippet
"Can I bolt a fuel tank?" Not for diesel/gasoline underground-code requires continuous shell. Bolted is for water, sludge, grain, cement. For edible oil, welded stainless or welded CS+lining only.
Rule of thumb ZN gives clients: liquids you drink, eat or burn → welded; bulk solids dry and free-flowing → either, but welded for long-term grain reserve.
